Electronics: Made in India

So it seems Indian government is taking steps to encourage manufacturing in India as per an article in ET on Friday.

Today India is a 'great market' for electronics goods, we are being influenced by the gadgets of others but doesn't  have our own manufacturing units within our country irrespective of the designing done here.

According to The Department of Electronics and IT, nearly 2000 chips are being designed every year in India and more than 20, 000 engineers are working on various aspects of chip design and verification. Shouldn't India continue to improve on this domain rather than focus energies on the high-risk fab game where Taiwan and China have huge leads? And does it make sense to replicate expertise already available in the rest of the world?

Well the step has been taken, the Union cabinet of India has given 'in-principle' approval for two international consortia to establish India’s first semiconductor fabrication plants.

Also under Electronics Maufacturing Clusters(EMCs) scheme government of India has created policies to attract investments in EMCs to encourage manufacturing of specific high priority electronic product lines in India in addition to VLSI and chip design. 7 new clusters will be set up in Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Kerela.
India is trying to create an electronics manufacturing ecosystem to prevent the loss of billions of dollars of foreign exchange in such imports every year.

Recently Bosh and Samsung has got approval for about ₹436 crore and ₹406 crore seperately under Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme (MSIPS).

By these schemes government wants to present $400 billion opportunity by the year 2020.The domestic semiconductor market in India will grow (to $9.66 billion by 2015).As more and more Industries will be set up in the coming years, employment graph is meant to be increased. Along with this, the semiconductor's demand within own country through imports will be reduced. Thus letting a higher GDP.

As India doesn't have any experience in chip production and it's just the starting , it's positive outcomes will take time and hardship.

Whatever it is , Whenever it is going to, if everything goes right, soon we could hear "Chips: Made in India" instead of "Chips: Made in China". :P
